History of THE HERSCHEL

THE HERSCHEL was the home of Inuvialuk Anglican deacon Thomas Umaok who was ordained on Herschel Island in 1928. Herschel Island offers the only protective harbour between the Mackenzie River Delta and Point Barrow in Alaska, making it a haven for ships and a key whaling port throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its Inuvialuktun name is Qikiqtaruk, meaning “it is island”. Umaok's house was moved to Tuktoyaktuk before Herschel Island became a national park in 1987. We renovated the building throughout 2023-24 and welcomed our first guests to this historic space in spring 2025.
